My work centres on how superheroes can be symbols that are recognised for the qualities they represent. This project specifically draws on the Well-being of Future Generations Act in Wales, while also addressing the pressing issue of ocean plastic pollution. I have designed and produced a costume inspired by popular studios such as Marvel and DC and in particular the designs of Laura Jean Shannon, known for her work on "The Boys" TV show.
The costume, constructed primarily from neoprene in combination with scuba, while also using duchess satin for the flowing cape. Features a complimentary colour palette of blue, orange, navy and black, with a unique printed fabric that I designed onto neoprene showcasing an interlocking heptagon and pentagon pattern. This design symbolises the 7 well being goals and the 5 ways of working of the Well-Being of Future Generations Act. But also repeated to reflect the waves of the ocean.
My project encourages dialogue around the importance of environmental action and the collective responsibility we share in safeguarding our planet for future generations. By merging the worlds of cinematic heroes, fashion, and environmental activism, "The Hero Project" advocates for a world where sustainability is at the forefront of our consciousness. While you have read this statement, around two truckloads of plastic have been offloaded into our oceans. This cannot continue as it is. We need action now.
I began by gathering images and ideas to portray the visual mood of the project.
This shows the 3 designs I had looked at for my project and the stages of rendering.
I used Procreate and a number of reference images to begin the ideas process for the suit
This view of the costume helped me when I was creating and piecing together the torso sections to make sure that they all fit together as they should.
